Across the UK market in 2026, a typical 4kW system — the most common size for an average home — runs roughly £5,500 to £8,500 fully installed, including panels, inverter, mounting, electrical work and DNO notification. Smaller 3kW systems start lower; larger 8–10kW systems for high-usage homes with EVs or heat pumps run higher.

For most owner-occupied UK homes with a south, east or west-facing roof, the payback period sits at around 7 to 10 years, after which you get years of much cheaper electricity from panels backed by up to 25-year manufacturer performance warranties.

The single biggest factor is whether anyone's home during the day. If your household uses power while the sun's up — working from home, a heat pump, an EV on charge — you use more of what you generate and payback is quicker. If the house sits empty 9-to-5, a battery helps you shift that generation to the evening. We model this from your own bills rather than assuming.

In most cases, no. Roof-mounted solar on a domestic property is classed as permitted development across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so no application is needed.

The exceptions are listed buildings and, for front-facing panels, conservation areas — where you should check with your local authority first. If your home falls into either, we'll flag it at survey stage rather than after scaffolding goes up.

Scaffolding is a standard safety requirement for roof work in the UK and is included in your quote. It usually goes up the day before and comes down the day after.

Most installations take one to two days for panels only, or two to three days if battery storage is included. We schedule around you and keep disruption to the house to a minimum.

South-facing roofs are ideal, but east and west-facing roofs work well too — an east-west split can actually spread generation more evenly across the day. The main things that reduce suitability are heavy shading and predominantly north-facing roofs.

Roof pitch, condition and structural capacity all matter, which is why every system starts with a proper roof survey rather than a satellite guess. If your roof isn't right, we'll tell you — it's cheaper for everyone than finding out later.

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) means energy suppliers pay you for surplus solar electricity you generate but don't use or store. Suppliers are legally required to offer an SEG tariff, and rates vary between them — MCS certification is a requirement for claiming SEG, which all our partner's installations carry.

We handle SEG registration as part of handover and advise on the strongest tariffs available at the time of your install.

It depends on when you use electricity. A battery stores daytime generation for use in the evening and overnight, which makes a real difference if your household is out during the day — otherwise much of your generation would simply export at the SEG rate.

If you're home during the day, you may get strong value from panels alone, with the option to add storage later. We size the recommendation to your usage pattern rather than defaulting to the biggest battery.
